Synopsys' Optical Solutions Group has an opening for a full time Senior Optical Systems R&D Engineer. The successful candidate should have excellent optical system design, analysis, integration, and testing skills as well as substantive interdisciplinary engineering expertise.

The optical systems engineering work will have experience in optical product development in commercial, industrial, medical, or aerospace markets that involve elements of system model development, first order layout/architecture, radiometry, signal to noise (S/N) analysis, electro-optical (E-O) analysis and specification, optical design, mechanical and optical tolerancing, performance testing, thermo-optical engineering, electronic noise analysis, materials science, opto-mechanics, and cost-modeling over a broad range of commercial and government electro-optical-mechanical-firmware-software systems. We recognize no one candidate will likely cover all areas, but successful applicants should be broadly interested in performing engineering analysis and product or systems development work in as many of the technical areas listed above as possible and wish to continue to learn and grow in areas of lesser skill. Successful candidates will be curious learners that work well within multi-disciplinary technical teams which include both internal and external personnel.

Responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to, supplying the following services to external clients:

  • Convert customer functional requirements into optical system specifications
  • Transform incomplete and/or inconsistent specifications into actionable optical system solutions
  • Develop system architectures and perform trades analysis to establish cost effective system design direction
  • Develop end-to-end mathematical system performance models spanning a broad range of technical disciplines, employing a variety of mathematical modeling tools
  • Develop system cost models
  • Flow system requirements down & up through interdisciplinary sub-systems via performance error and cost budgets/analysis and negotiate with design team to close performance and cost gaps
  • Work with 3rd party vendors to achieve required specifications/solutions and validate system models
  • Lead and/or participate in design reviews and briefings
  • Prepare Statements of work and proposals for multi-phase development programs
The work may be as an individual contributor, or as a lead/chief engineer dependent upon client needs and candidate skills.

Ideal experience would be as a Lead Optical Systems Engineer with a career spanning a broad range of commercial and/or military/government systems and technologies
  • Experience using CODE V, LightTools, or similar optical/illumination design software is a plus.
  • Several years of prior interdisciplinary systems engineering work at various levels of project development, from formulation, through hardware specification, and on through design, build, and test
  • High tolerance for ambiguity and takes the lead in turning the kernels of project ideas into realizable systems
  • The ability to multi-task, working on several different projects simultaneously
  • Articulate; excellent communication skills; works well with people
  • A proven record of accomplishments with excellent references
  • U.S. Citizenship or Permanent Resident Status is required, to enable the candidate access to ITAR-controlled projects.
